When I got addicted to surfing, I would always go to La Union every weekend to surf and catch some gnarly waves.  People going to Urbiztondo beach to surf would usually pass by the Macho temple.  Every time we do pass by, we’d feel that we are near the beach already.  It’s our landmark actually

At first we often joke around saying it’s the Temple of Machos.  “Macho” as in a strong, well-buffed guy

I didn’t know that you can just drop by this place, enjoy the view, maybe do your pai pai (worship) and take photos.  The Macho Temple is situated technically above a hill and the view from the top is overlooking some parts of San Fernando, La Union and the South China sea.

On the temple, you will see the shrine of Ma-zeun.  The image is believed to have a Christian counterpart known as Virgin of Caysasa, which is found in St. Martin in Taal, Batangas.  Aside from the many statues on the walls of the temple, you would also get to appreciate the architecture of the temple which is inspired by ancient Chinese decors.

Travel time from Manila:

by bus: 6-8 hours

by car: 4-5 hours

by plane: it should take less than an hour

Of course, it will also depend on the time you are travelling.
